Elias was born at home at 126 Fry Street. He lived in the same house throughout his youth. At the age of 18, he was an apprentice to a candy maker, according to the 1880 census. City directories listed him later as a porter, agent and peddler. In 1890 he was working as a wood finisher for J.W. Rieck. He worked as a wood finisher for 45 years.

Eli married Wilhelmina Koch on January 13, 1883. Minnie was 9 years younger than he. They had five children, one dying at the age of two months. The child they lost would have been called Arthur Charles, but one of the siblings stated that his mother called him "Charlie Boy." He died at the age of 7 months.

Eli died two years after Minnie.
