He married Anna Miller in Chicago on May 18, 1882. Anna was born in Chicago. Together they had four children, although only one lived to adulthood.
Joseph retired when he was 62. He and Anna left for Europe on May 17, 1922 on the Polonia from New York to Copehnagen. They went to Germany to visit relatives and Switzerland and France to see the countries. They were gone for four months.
At some time in their lives, they moved to Barrington, where he was a well-known upholsterer.
