Maria was the 6th child of Pancratius and Maria Agnes Schwenk Baumeister. Only 6 of her 12 siblings reached adulthood.

Louisa, as she was called, grew up on the Near West Side of Chicago in a house at 126 Fry Street.

She married Jacob Haehlen Jr. on September 6, 1883 in Chicago. Louisa and Jacob had eight children.

Louisa died suddenly of heart failure in Des Moines.
