Mrs. Harriet Peet was born August 28, 1824, and died January 14, 1899, being the oldest of twelve children born to Mr. and Mrs. Peris Holmes, of Morgan county, Illinois, one of the pioneer families of this county, located five and one-half miles southeast of Jacksonville. Two brothers and two sisters survive her, Rev. D. D. Holmes and O. B. Holmes, of Jacksonville. Mrs. Sarah E. Scroggins of Lexington, Ill., ad Mrs. Minnie Gilman, of Madison, Wisc.

Her growing years were spent within one-half mile of her birth place. On the 15th day of June, 1845, she was united in marriage to Mr. Ethel Peet, of Waverly. Seven children was the result of this union, three of whom survive the mother. Daniel Peet, of this city; Curtis Peet, of St. Louis, and Mrs. Lillie Allen, of this city. She was ever a devoted wife and mother. For the last twenty-one years she has lived a widow, under the directing care of her children. Sixty-one years ago last November, at the age of thirteen, she made a public profession of the christian religion, uniting with the Dimond Grove Baptist church, from which she was eventually transferred to the Waverly Baptist church as one of its constituent members, from which she now passes to that higher union in the glory world. Being a pilgrim who desired a better country - that is, a Heavenly country -" there remaineth a rest to the people of God.: Deaf mother, rest; dear sister, rest from thy labors, and may the happy work of thy life follow theee on to the glory of God in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in this city at 2:30 p.m, Sunday, January 15, 1899, conducted by Rev. A. S. Kaye, pastor of the Waverly Congregational church, who spoke from the words found in 2d Corinthians, 1st chapter, 3d and 4th verses, after which the interment was had in the East Cemetery.
