George William Martin was born on January 28, 1842 in Brown County, Ohio. He was the son of John Alexander Martin and Elizabeth Gaunce Martin of Brown County, Ohio.

In 1853, his parents relocated from Brown County, Ohio to Lawrence County, Illinois where they purchased a large farm. George was eleven years old at the time.

George married Ursula Fite in Lawrence County, Illinois, on 6 April 1876. They remained in Lawrence County until the Autumn of 1881.

After some traveling with his brother Jackson Martin and his wife Matilda Fite Martin, including to Missouri, they then settled in Hamilton County, Illinois.

In 1881, George and Ursula settled in Hamilton County, Illinois.
His brother Jackson Martin and his wife Matilda with their two children also settled in Hamilton County, Illinois at the same time where they all lived for the remainder of their lives.

Although no children were born to George and Ursula, they raised Myrtle Miller.

George suffered a fall one week before his death. He died on the evening of Thanksgiving day, 1924. The Rev. C. M. Prince officiated at his funeral.

He left behind his grieving widowed brother Jackson Martin of Hamilton County, Illinois who survived him by thirteen years.

George is buried beside his beloved wife Ursula.
