John Alexander Martin was the eldest child of James Martin and Nancy Martin.

He was the husband of Elizabeth "Betsy" Gaunce Martin. They were married on October 24, 1833 in Nicholas County, Kentucky.

John Alexander Martin grew up in Nicholas County, Kentucky then, when he was a teenager, in Brown County, Ohio, where his parents had relocated.

John's parents then relocated to Ripley County, Indiana in 1849 with several of his siblings and a three-year old Martin nephew, but John and Betsy remained in Brown County, Ohio.

Their son Charles Martin, who died in 1845, was buried in Brown County, Ohio.

From Brown County, Ohio, he and his wife Betsy and their children in 1853 settled in Lawrence County, Illinois, where they had a 91-acre farm and where they both resided for the rest of their lives.

John Alexander Martin's Martin family and the Gaunce family and the Fite family were allied for many generations, dating back to Scotland before they came to America.

Starting in 1869, six or seven of his nieces and nephews, children of his sister Malinda Martin Fite, who were living with their parents in Ripley County, Indiana, joined him and settled in Lawrence County, Illinois. John was newly widowed at that time.

John applied for and received his deceased son's Civil War pension, citing John's dire financial straits during his second marriage.

John's jealous second wife, Eliza French, would not allow John to be buried beside his beloved first wife Elizabeth "Betsy" Gaunce Martin, who predeceased him by 32 years and is buried in the Brian Cemetery with their daughter Nancy Martin.

After she insisted John be buried in the Ridgley cemetery, when his second wife Eliza French died twendy years later, in 1918, she was buried in a separate cemetery, the Sumner Cemetery in Lawrence County, Illinois.
