MEETS DEATH BY DROWNING

Axel Larson Drowns While Bathing in Des Moines River Sunday

Sunday afternoon about five o'clock the sad news reached the people of Stratford that Axel Larson, a young man residing with his parents, west of Stratford, had been drowned while in bathing in the Des Moines river, near what is known as Stony Point. The day being unusually warm Larson rode his bicycle down to the river to take a bath in the warm waters of the Des Moines river. On arriving here he found a number of friends in bathing and he immediately entered the water. He had been in the water but a short time when he suggested that an attempt be made to swim across the river, which varied in depth from two to nineteen feet. Mr. Larson started out and summoned one of the friends to follow him, which he did until they came to a stake placed in the water warning bathers of the exceedingly swift current. Mr. Larson proceeded to swim past the stake and was immediately drawn into the swift current. His cries for help soon brought a large number of people to the scene of the drowning, but here they reached the spot the body had disappeared and the voice had been silenced forever. A boat was also dispatched to the scene in order to aid the drowning young man, but owing to the distance was unable to give any aid. Rescue parties were at once formed and hastened to the scene and at once began the work of recovering the body. The parties worked the remainder of the day and most of the night, and on Monday the work was again resumed. Dynamite was used in attempting to recover the body and the task was almost abandoned when the body was discovered in the evening about 6:30 o'clock on a sand bar three-fourths of a mile below the scene of the drowning.

Mr. Larson was a young man about twenty-five years of age and his untimely death will be sincerely regretted by a large number of friends. Last winter he joined the M.W.A. Camp at this place and was also a member of the Forester team. His sudden demise has removed a young man from our midst just in the prime of manhood and the bereaved parents, brothers and sisters have the heartfelt sympathy of the people of this community.

Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the residence attended by a large number of friends of the deceased. A beautiful floral shield was given by the M.W.A. Camp of Stratford and many other beautiful floral offerings bedecked the casket. The remains were interred in the Swede Bend cemetery.
