Jewel H. Carlson, 85, died on Saturday, May 29, 2004, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church in Bruce with the Rev. Wayne Hjermstad officiating. Burial is at Elmwood Cemetery in Bruce. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Rude's Funeral Home in Brookings. Military Graveside rites are by the Bruce American Legion.

He was born on Feb. 9, 1919, in Gibbon, Minn., the son of John and Bada (Holmquist) Carlson. He received his education in rural school near Gibbon. He married Gloria Anderson on April 15, 1941, in Winthrop, Minn. In 1942, he served in the United States Army until his discharge in 1945. After returning from the Army, he farmed near Gibbon, Hector, Lake Lillian, Ivanhoe and Hendricks, Minn., until moving to Bruce in 1971. Mr. Carlson was then employed in the maintenance department at the Brookings High School until his retirement in 1984.

He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Bruce. He enjoyed fishing and especially spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria of Bruce; two sons, Douglas Carlson of Bruce and Gerald (Linda) Carlson of Castle Rock, Colo.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and one sister, Jenette Peterson of Little Falls, Minn.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Marlene; one infant son; six brothers, and two sisters.
