COOKEVILLE Funeral services for Avo Boyd Evans, 88, of Cookeville will be held Sunday, Oct. 21, at 1:30 p.m. at Cookeville First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Cookeville Cemetery. Family will receive friends Saturday, Oct. 20, from 5-8 p.m. at the Cookeville chapel of Hooper Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home and again Sunday, Oct. 21,
from 12:30 p.m. until time of services at the church.
Mrs. Evans died suddenly Monday, Oct. 15, 2007, at White County Community Hospital in Sparta.
She was born Sept. 29, 1919, in Putnam County to the late Judge Ernest Houston (E.H.) and Mattie Hughes Ragland Boyd.
Mrs. Evans graduated from Tennessee Polytechnic Institute, now Tennessee Technological University, in 1940. She then began her elementary school teaching career at the Pleasant Hill Elementary School in Cumberland County and later in the Knox County School System in Knoxville. In 1985, she retired from the Putnam County Schools System after teaching a number of years at Capshaw Elementary and Northeast Elementary Schools in Cookeville. She was also a member of Putnam County Retired Teachers Association, the Tennessee Retired Teachers Association and an active longtime member of Cookeville First Presbyterian Church.
Her family includes two sons, Walter L. Evans III of Richmond, Va., and Ernest B. Evans of Cookeville; a
brother, Houston Boyd Jr., a granddaughter, Angela D. Lutzker; and two greatgrandchildren, Jack and Zoe
Lutzker, all of Arlington, Va.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Evans was preceded in death by two brothers, Alvin and William Hardin Boyd; a sister, Mary Butler Boyd; and her former husband, Dr. Walter L. Evans Jr.
