Ernest Houston boyd was born October 1, 1880 in Cookeville. He finished his education at Cumberland University and graduated from the law department of that institution.
On August 21, 1912 he married Miss Mattie Ragland of Cookeville.
Judge Boyd was Superintendent of Public Instruction for Putnam county from 1903 to 1911.
He began the practice law in partnership with his father, Alvin W Boyd, who died in 1912.

He servied as Attorney-General of the 5th Judicial District from 1925 to 1932, then became Chancellor of the 4th Chancery District. In 1925 he was Grand Master of the I O O F of Tennessee.
Judge Boyd is a writer of ability and a recognized authority on the early history of this section.
