Kenneth Dather, 72, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at his residence.
Services will be 9:30 a.m. Friday at Morningside Assembly of God Church, with the Rev. Thomas M. Jacobs officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Morningside Post 697. Visitation will be 3 to 8:30 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. led by the Rev. Dann Speichinger, all at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.
Mr. Dather was born Nov. 1, 1928, in Battle Creek, Neb., the son of George and Madeline (Bateman) Dather. He attended Madison County School System and then Battle Creek City School. He later received his general education diploma at Fort Knox, Ky. In 1944, he moved with his family to Norfolk, Neb.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946 during World War II, where he participated in the Europe reconstruction in France and Germany. He was then stationed in Colorado Springs, Colo., Japan, Korea with the 13th Engineer Corps 7th Division and Fort Bellwood, Va.
He married Mary Cullop on July 25, 1955 in Maryland. He was then stationed in Korea with the 8th Army Engineer Corps, France, a tour in Vietnam and retired in 1967 as a sergeant first class.
In September 1968, he began employment with the U.S. Post Office in Sioux City. He retired in October 1992.
He was a member of American Legion Morningside Post 697 and Retired Letter Carriers.
Survivors include three sons and their wives, Kelly and Vicki Ford of Sergeant Bluff, Kenneth and Susan Dather Jr. of Sioux City and David and Cyndee Dather of Milford, Iowa; three daughters, Sheila Ford, Linda and her husband, Erik Larsen and Pamela Proffitt, all of Sioux City; and 13 grandchildren, Chris Ford, Jeremy, Daniel, Jocasta, Jennifer, Melinda, Torrey and Brinn Dather and Catherine, Sarah, Mary, Grace and Lincoln Larsen.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and a brother, Forrest.
