Mary Ellen Dather, 69, of Sioux City died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at her residence following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Christy, Smith & Hockenberry Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dann Speichinger of Washington Heights Chapel officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 8:30 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8:30 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mrs. Dather was born on Jan. 5, 1929, in Ceres, Va., the daughter of Thomas Jessie and Bertie Gray Cullop. She was raised in Ceres, moved to Alexandria, Va., and then to Norfolk, Neb., Fort Knox, Ken., Fort Lenard Wod, Mo., and Sioux City.

She married Kenneth H. Dather Sr. on July 25, 1955, in Maryland.

She was a member of Washington Heights Chapel.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, David and his wife, Cyndee, of Milford, Iowa, Kenneth Jr. and his wife, Susan, of Sioux City, and Kelli and Vicki Ford of Sergeant Bluff; three daughters, Sheila G. Ford and Linda and her husband, Eric Larsen, all of Sioux City, and Pamela and her husband, Doug Proffitt, of Des Moines; four sisters, Hazel Hubble, Margaret and her husband, Jack Warner, Catherine Atwell, and Olivine and her husband, Grant Hall; 11 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and seven brothers, Robert, Jack, Joseph, Eugene, Raymond, Everett and Conley.
