Sheffield Youth Drowns; Stepped Into Deep Hole

A 19-year-old Sheffield boy stepped into a hole while wading at the mouth of Town Creek Sunday afternoon and drowned. He could not swim.

Colbert County Coroner James L. Mays said the death of Bernard Ray Jeffreys of 2611 14th Ave was due to accidental drowning.

Mays said the victim, Leonard Caldwell and Jerry Wilbanks were wading in water about waist deep at the mouth of Town Creek when the youth stepped into a hole and went under.

Caldwell, the only one of the three who could swim, tried to rescue Jeffreys and was almost drowned himself, the coroner said. An unidentified Negro pulled Caldwell from the creek.

Sheffield and Florence rescue squads went to the scene, but reported the body had been recovered when they arrived. Cleveland Borden and Oscar Patterson recovered the body, it was reported.

Sheffield Fireman Travis Borden said he and fellow fireman Ulus Farris were told that there was considerable current.

Mays said the boy went under about 3 p.m. and his body was located about 5:30 p.m.

The creek is on the Colbert-Lawrence county line.

Funeral services for Mr. Jeffreys will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Lawrence County. Burial will be in Hard Shell Cemetery with Spry Funeral Home of Sheffield directing.

Mr. Jeffreys was an employee of Nehi Bottling Co.

The body will be at the residence until time for the service.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Anna Lee Jeffreys; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Jeffreys, Sheffield; three brothers, Billy H. Jeffreys, Donald Jeffreys, Michael D. Jeffreys, all of Sheffield; two sisters, Miss Bobbie Jeffreys and Mrs. Betty Gresham, both of Sheffield; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Elbit Hagood, Kansas City, Mo.
