Gunner's Mate 3/c Ogburn was killed in action on August 10, 1943, but the ship, the USS Astoria {CA-34} was sunk on August 9, 1942 during the Battle of Savo Island. This ship was a New Orleans Class Heavy Cruiser that was engaged at the Battle of the Coral Sea and Midway. The Astoria was not at Pearl Harbor on 12-7-1941, but was heading west to Midway Island.
He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Keely Ogburn of Dunlap, Illinois, and is a 1940 graduate of Dunlap H.S., and was in the Navy by Sept. of 1940. He does leave two sisters, Miss Phyllis, and Mrs. Russell Woland of Peoria, Illinois.
