Gordon Louis Downes, 60, of Muddy Brook Road, Ellington, died last Thursday at the Rockville City Hospital after a short illness. He was born August 31, 1895, in Somers, son of the late William and Minnie Chase Downes, and he lived in Ellington over 30 years. He was employed for many year as a steam shovel operator and recently had conducted his own business. A World War I veteran, he was a member of Hatheway-Miller Post, American Legion of Ellington.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Rose Luetjen Downes; two daughters, Mrs. Arthur Caldwell and Mrs. Donald Dilworth of Ellington; five sons, Arthur G. of Hazardville, William M. of St. Petersburg, Fla., Lewis J., Earl H. and Sherwood F. Downes of Ellington; six grandchildren; two sisters, Miss Anna Downes and Mrs. Frances Randall, both of Stafford Springs and a stepbrother, Frederick Pease of Stafford Springs.
The funeral was held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Ladd Funeral Home, with the Rev. Allison R. Heaps, associate pastor of Union Congregational Church, officiating. Burial was in Ellington Center Cemetery.
