Miss Clara Matilda Johnson, West Miller street, lifelong Springfield resident and member of a prominent pioneer family, died yesterday at Springfield hospital. She was 79 years old. Death followed a brief illness.

Miss Johnson had been enjoying excellent health until last Thursday when she suffered a stroke of paralysis at her home. Remove to the hospital she grew gradually weaker until death came.

Born in this city May 20 [sic], 1862, Miss Johnson was the eldest daughter of Lars J. and Anna C. Johnson. Her father, who came to Springfield from Sweden in 1852, was for many years engaged in the soda water manufacturing business at Fourth and Carpenter streets in the firm of Johnson & Peterson. Her father die din 1896 and her mother died in 1916.

Miss Johnson was an active member of Grace Lutheran church throughout her life. She resided at the old family homestead on West Miller street with her sister, Miss Rosa J. Johnson, who survives, together with two brothers, Edwin Johnson, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Elmer L. Johnson, residing on a farm nine miles north of the city; also several nieces and nephews. The burial will be in the family lot in Oak Ridge cemetery. - IL State Journal, Springfield, IL, 8-7-1941
