Onaga – Earnest E. Carl, 80, Onaga, died Thursday, January 23, 1997, at an Onaga nursing home.

Mr. Carl was a farmer and stockman and had been a partner in Carl's Steakhouse in Onaga. He also had worked for the National Farmer's Organization in the 1960s. He served in the Army in Panama during World War II.

He was born July 3, 1916, south of Onaga, the son of Ernest Colonel and Bertha Day Carl. He moved from Onaga to Virginia in 1965 and returned to Onaga in 1986.

Mr. Carl was a member of First Congregational Church, UCC in Onaga. He was a former member of Masonic Lodge No. 188 AF&AM and the National Farmer's Organization. He was a former member and past president of Onaga Lions Club, and past commander of Post No. 85 of the American Legion.

He was married to Alice M. McPartling Underwood on July 20, 1947, in Topeka. She died May 24, 1986.

Survivors include two sons, Chip Carl, Carmel, IN and Ken Underwood, Dallas, TX; two brothers, Grayson Carl, Onaga, and Ralph Carl, Oceanside, CA; two sisters, Mary Rowles, Fort Worth, TX and Donna Lee Valburg, Onaga; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church, UCC in Onaga. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Topeka. Mr. Carl will lie in state at Tessendorf-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga, where relatives and friends will meet from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Mr. Carl also will lie in state an hour before service time Monday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Association and sent in care of the funeral home.
