Lettie was raised on a large farm in Stockholm, WI and born to Martha J. Quiner Carpenter and Charles Carr Carpenter. (Her mother Martha was sister to Caroline Ingalls, mother of Laura Ingalls Wilder.) Lettie married Robert Arthur Axtell on May 1, 1895 and they lived in the Stockholm, Maiden Rock and Pepin area for many years before moving to Danbury, WI to try their hand at farming. Lettie and Bob raised five children, Florence Aldora, Arthur, Charles, George and Alice.
