Plainview News, April 28, 1939, Thursday Evening, Marion Carpenter Stricken at Show; Succombs within Few Minutes of Attack:
A death which was a great shock to the family and the community occured Thursday evening in the sudden passing of Miss Marion Carpenter. She came downtown that evening to attend the show at the Gem Theater. During the picture, at 8:15, she suffered a heart attack and passed away almost immediately.
Miss Carpenter and her twin sister, Miss Myrtle, have served this community as nurses for more than 25 years. They were born at Stockholm, WI February 3, 1879, and came to Plainview in 1900. Taking up the nursing course at the Winona General Hospital in 1911, they graduated in 1913 and have since followed that occupation. They purchased their present home and their widowed mother mader her home with them for 16 years until her death in January 1927. Mr. Carpenter died in 1882. They also took into their home, a niece, Marguerite Riley, when she was a month old and cared for her.
Six brothers and two sisters survive. The sisters are Mrs. Lettie Axtell, Danbury, WI; Mrs. Nancy White, Plainview; Mrs. Millie Axtell, Pepin, WI; Mrs. Charles Longsdorf, Arkansaw, WI; Mrs. Charles R. Greive, and Miss Myrtle, Plainview. The two brothers are also twins, Tom of Stockholm, WI, and George L. of Washington, D.C. Brothers and sisters who preceded her in death were Mrs. Etta M. Riley, Martha who died in childhood, Will, Charles, and Joseph.
In her many years of service in the homes of this community, Miss Carpenter has made many close and intimate friends. In many cases, she and her sister worked together. Their resemblance to each other, their practice of being together, dressing alike made it impossible for many people to tell them apart. It has made them outstanding and makes this death more sad. Miss Carpenter has always been a member of the Church of Christ here and has been a very active member of the Ladies Union and the missionary society of the church.
Funeral services were conducted on Monday afternoon at the Church of Christ by the pastor E. Leo Balf. Assisting in the service with the music were the Harris twins of the Minneapolis Bible Institute. Six nephews acted as pallbearers, Gerald Greive; Ralph, Lyndon, and Donald Carpenter; George Axtell, and Harold Riley. Burial was made in Greenwood Cemetery.
Relatives from out of town who attended the funeral were George Carpenter and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Carpenter, Washington, D.C, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Carpenter and son Lyndon and George Axtell, Stockholm, WI; Doris Carpenter, Winona; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Longsdorf, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Proue, Arkansaw, WI; Mrs. Millie Axtell, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Axtell, Pepin, WI; Mr. and Mrs. J.N. Bruce and daughter Jane Ellen, Detroit Lakes; Mrs. Joe W. Irvin and children Dickie, Nancy Jo, and David Dwayne, Shelby, MT; Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Jones, Harold Riley, Lois Axtell, Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Greive, St. Paul; Mr. and Mrs. Lansford Ingalls, Hammond.
