The Gould - Sherman families were "Cutlerite" Mormans. This was a group that left the Morman group because they did not believe in some of the doctorines set forth by the church, such as pologomy. The early members of their group settled on the shores of Clitherall Lake, in Otter Tail County. The churches headquarters had been established in Independence, Missouri and as the Clitherall church waned, many moved to Independence.
