Charles was the youngest child of Christian Fiedler and "Mina" Kulp. His father died before Charles was 10-months-old. Mina remarried in early January 1872, and Charles' step-father was Frederick "Fred" Gueck.

Charles married Barbara on 08 Apr 1891 in Sterling, Missouri. They lived in Lincoln County, Missouri for a few years after their marriage, but then settled on a farm north of Batchtown in Calhoun County, Illinois where they lived for 40 years. He was a fruit farmer, and they were the parents of 10 children.

Of their children who survived to adulthood, Rose lived at home with her elderly parents into the mid-1950's. At that time, William was a civil engineer; Raus lived at home and was a deputy sheriff in Calhoun County.

Several of the children moved out of state by the 1950's--Mae and Oren in Missouri; Pearl in Wisconsin; and Oliver in California. Nelle and Karl both moved to Madison County, Illinois.

At the time of his death at Boyd Memorial Hospital, Charles was 88 years, 5 months and 26 days old. He was survived by 9 children--4 daughters, Rose Fiedler of Batchtown, Illinois; Nelle of Collinsville, Illinois; Mae of Jennings, Missouri; and Pearl of LaCross, Wisconsin; and 5 sons, William and Raus, both of Batchtown; Oren of Clarksville, Missouri; Karl of Godfrey, Illinois; and Oliver of San Rafael, California. He was also survived by 1 sister, Hanna Ufer of Hardin, Illinois.

Visitation was held on 23 Sep 1957 at the C. C. Hanks Funeral Home in Hardin. Funeral Services were conducted there at 1:00 p.m. the following afternoon. Charles was buried next to his wife, Barbara, who passed away 2 months before him.

CALHOUN COUPLE
OBSERVES 65TH
DATE OF WEDDING

HARDIN — A host of friends and relatives gathered at the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Fiedler Sunday afternoon to help them celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary. Seven of their nine children were home. A son in California and a daughter in LaCrosse, Wis., were unable to make the long trip for the occasion.

The Fiedlers hold the record of the longest married couple in Calhoun County and they have spent the entire 65 years in the Batchtown Community, 41 years in their present home. Fiedler is six years older than his wife, who is 81. Neither is in very good health.

Highlights for the couple were a card from President Eisenhower and a letter from Governor Stratton. They say they are looking forward to casting votes for Ike this fall. Mrs. Fiedler has been unable to leave home for some time, but the new law will allow her to cast an absentee ballot.
