Upon the death of her mother, Charles moved the family south, with his mother, Hannah Marie (Kingsbury) Burns, who had remarried Stillman Hebron Goodenough.
There she met and married William Marion Vanscoyk, on the 28 December 1897, in Payne County, Oklahoma Territory. She was living in Clayton at the time, where her father had a store.
She was a devout Christian, with considerable influence on her daughter, Bessie, and her grandchildren.
