OBITUARY

THE CHARITON DEMOCRAT
Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, March 27, 1890

Never surely do we realize our own utter weakness and helplessness more than when the Angel of Death has visited our homes and taken from our longing, loving eyes what seemed most dear to us of all our treasures, the one we felt we could never part with.

It is thus with the family of the late Mrs. Maria Bonnett, the news of whose sudden death on Monday, March 17th, 1890, was received by her friends with feelings of deep sorrow. She had long been a resident near Chariton and had drawn to herself a host of loving friends.

Always affable, always having a pleasant word and smile for everyone, always warmly welcoming visitors to her home, she endeared herself to all who knew her. She will long be remembered by loving hearts, and her well known face will be sadly missed on our streets. To her neighbors her death is a special loss. No kinder nor more willing neighbor could there be, than was Mrs. Bonnett, none more ready to minister to the wants of others, to weep with those that weep, or to rejoice with with the happy.

Her big, warm heart was always ready to sympathize with all the distresses, and none ever looked to her in vain, for sympathy. A loving mother, and a faithful wife - how well she fulfilled these positions, none could tell but those who knew her best.

Prior to 1877 she had been for twelve years a member of the Christian church. On the 24th of January, 1877, she was presented by the Rev. Joseph A. Russell, then Rector of St. Andrew's Church, to the Rt. Rev. W. Stevens Perry, Bishop of Iowa, for confirmation. The distance of her residence from town, and her numerous duties, prevented her attendance at the church as often as she desired, for she esteemed it her greatest pleasure to join in the prayers, and in the praises of God.

Mrs. Maria Bonnett was the daughter of John and Margaret Virgin, who at an early day moved from Pennsylvania to the vicinity of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, where Maria Virgin was born Feb. 10th, 1834. In 1853 the family removed to Menard Co., Ill. Until 1858 she attended school in Jacksonville, Ill., and during the two following years she taught school.

In Dec. 1859, she married Lewis Bonnett, then of McLean, Ill. They resided near Leroy in that county until near 1865 when they moved to Chariton, where they have since lived. Mrs. Bonnett was the mother of eight children, five of whom survive to mourn her loss, and who have the hearfelt sympathy of all their friends.
