Dave and Vela had eight children and made their home in Ruby Valley, Nevada, Deseret Farms of Florida, South Georgia, Wyoming, and then Provo, Utah. She served in many callings in the Church, including Scouting, Stake and Ward Relief Society and Primary Presidents, Early Morning Seminary teacher (for 13 years), and Gospel Doctrine teacher. She served a full time mission with Dave to Capetown, South Africa and was a temple worker. Her life was dedicated to her husband, her family, and to service in the church and community.
She is survived by her husband David H. Hawkins of Provo and their eight children: David J. (Charlotte) Hawkins of Orem, John Wayne (Marilee) Hawkins of Orem, Virginia (Scott) Mahoney of Heber, Kimball (Betty) Hawkins of Bakersfield. CA, Patricia (Jeff) Shields of Salt Lake City, Kristine (Clayton) Forsythe of Grapevine, TX, Suzanne (John) Rozier of Visalia, CA and Matthew Karl (Shannon) Hawkins of Modesto, CA as well as 41 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. She is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: Verde (Wesley, deceased) Hughes, Lark L. (Arlea) Washburn, Luzon Washburn, J. Ballard (Barbara) Washburn, Val Gene (Charles) Ogles, Velyn (Kelly) Nichols, Veloy (Ray) Hansen, and Virginia (Mark) Oldroyd. She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers: Berk W. Washburn and Al Dean (Clara) Washburn.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 7, 2004 at the Pleasant View 1st Ward located at 650 Stadium Avenue in Provo. The viewing will begin at 12:00 noon with funeral services commencing at 2:00 p.m. Remembrances, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Perpetual Education Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
