Verde Washburn Hughes, 85, passed away in St. George, Utah, Tuesday, April 6, 2004, after a short illness. She was born Nov. 2, 1918, in Blanding, San Juan, Utah to Alvin Lavell and Wasel Amelia Black Washburn. She married Eldon Wesley Hughes Dec. 22, 1942, in the St. George Latter-day Saint Temple. Verde was an active member of the Latter-day Saint Church and served in many callings. She served in the California Mission from 1940 to 1941 and later in the Las Vegas Mission with her husband. She influenced many lives for good and has been a positive example to all. She was the curator of the Mesquite Museum for many years. Those who knew her lovingly called her Grandma Hughes. Verde is survived by children: Verlee (Stan) Peterson, Art (Sharyn) Hughes, Dixie (Bruce) Fish, Jim (Sallie) Hughes, Tom (Patti) Hughes, Ann (Robert) Imler, Susan (Ed) Ruth, Hali (Tony) Beckstead, Marie (Vay) Mickelson, David (Lynnette) Hughes, Greg (Sabrina) Hughes and Dot (Mark) McConnell; 55 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; brothers, Lark (Arlea) Washburn and J. Ballard (Barbara) Washburn; and sisters, Valgene (Charles) Ogles, Velyn (Kelly) Nicholes, Veloy (Ray) Hansen and Virginia (Mark) Oldroyd. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers, Berk and Aldean; one sister, Vela Hawkins; and a grandson, Wesley Fish. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 10, in the Whipple Latter-day Saint Church, in Mesquite. Interment will be in the Mesquite City Cemetery under the direction of Virgin Valley Mortuary.
