Member 21st Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company E.

S/O Nehemiah Sr and Frances (Craven) Ames. H/O Eliza Dutterer whom he married on Dec 4, 1856 in Defiance, OH. They had 5 children, the last one born just one week after Nehemiah enlisted in the army. They are: Emanuel, Frances Cathrine, John H, Hannah Lodema and Loretta/Laura.

Records show that Nehemiah enlisted Jan 4, 1964 in Co. E of the 21st Infantry, his daughter Loretta was born on Jan 13, and information from the "Ames is the Name" book says "The Union Army took him February 25, 1864 and he was stationed in Tennessee, where he contracted a violent fever and died on June 27, 1864. Eliza maintained the farm, lived until February 13, 1912, and raised the children."

Nehemiah's actual burial location has some questions, therefore there are TWO memorials listed in his name.
1) **This memorial** The US National Cemetery Interment Control Form, 1928-1962 states under their "remarks" that he was "originally buried: Nashville TN.". That cemetery is listed as Nashville National Cemetery, 1420 Gallatin Rd, South Madison, TN 37115 and his burial site is: Section I, Site 9189.
2) ** Memorial #51890802** Family information and information from page 69 of the "Ames is the Name" book--plus an obvious missing grave marker at this site --and the "remark" on the above mentioned US National Cemetery Interment record stating he was "originally buried: Nashville, TN", bring to question where he is actually buried. The alternative burial site is in Six Corners Cemetery, Hicksville, Defiance Co., OH next to his wife. As this was originally a private cemetery, records were not required to be kept until later.
The unanswered question is: Was Nehemiah "originally" buried in the Nashville National Cemetery and at sometime later was he removed to the Six Corners Cemetery next to his wife and where most of his extended family is buried?
***In July 2022, I received the following information from another Ames relative, Carlos N Olvera: The suggestion that this Nehemiah Ames may have been reinterred in OH is fact. These two Find A Grave sites should be reworded accordingly. Ancestry lists a link to the Graves Registration Card available at Fold3 showing he was buried in Lot 52, Block B, Grave 2 at Six Corners located at SR2 - 4 miles NE of Hicksville, OH with an upright memorial, which according to the picture is not there.

You can toggle between the Nehemiah (#1) Ames and the Nehemiah (#2) Ames memorials listed below under the siblings heading.

***For information and links to all 5 of Nehemiah & Eliza's children and other descendants, you need to go to memorial #51890802 --Nehemiah (#2) Ames.

**A special thanks to Rick Bushong who has done a wonderful job linking members of the 21st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. See the link to other members of the 21st at the top of this bio. The two Ames brothers in the 21st OVI, Co I, who survived the war are NOT related to Nehemiah Jr.
