S/O Nehemiah Sr and 2nd wife, Sarah Ann (Hulbert) Ames. Sarah Ann had been married twice before to a Mr Eyen (2 children) & a Mr Jons (2 children), so this was her 3rd marriage. Nehemiah and Sarah were married 17 June, 1857 and had one son -- George Washington Ames. Sarah died in May, 1960 when George was 2 years old. George is living with his widowed father, Nehemiah, in the 1860 census and with Nehemiah & Nehemiah's 3rd wife, Eliza (Roan) in the 1870 census in Farmer Twp, Defiance Co., OH. From page 76 of the "Ames is the Name" book by Richard D Ames, it says; "Domestic difficulties with the step-mother caused the young man at 17 to leave home and follow the prevailing advice of that time: "Go west, young man, go west." For some time he was lost to all members of the family, but soon after his 19th birthday he was in the State of Illinois, finally settling near Hudson, McLean County, as a farmer with 240 acres of land."

George's 1st marriage was to Barbara E Rediger on 17 Feb, 1881 in McLean Co., IL. Barbara was unable to overcome the ravages of influenza during childbirth and both she and their child, a son, died.

George's 2nd marriage was to Luna E (Osmon) Carlock on 26 Jan 1898 in McLean Co., IL. Information, again from the "Ames is the Name" book, says that, "Luna had a brain fever at the time of childbirth and both son and mother died."

George's 3rd wife was Della E Stevens. They were married 26 Feb 1902 in Hudson, McLean Co., IL. Della's grave marker lists an infant son born and died 4 months later in 1902. Although he is not named on the marker, the son's name was Cecil A Ames. In 1903, George and Della gave birth to a daughter Florence, who became the only mature child of George Washington Ames.

In Oct 1927, George was thrown from a wagon onto a concrete surface causing a severe injury. This was followed by a loss of vision and then hearing before his death in March, 1928.

George ended up having 18 half-brothers/sisters through his father Nehemiah Sr and 4 half-brothers through his mother Sarah Ann, but he had no full-brothers/sisters.
