Jerl was the son of Delson Forest Thorn and Clara Estella Geer Thorn. He was married August 23, 1930 in Ohio to his first wife Anna Belle McClung. They were married until the time of her death in 1971. Their children were Marjorie Jean, William Forest, Clara Belle, Ruth Anna, Jerry Wayne, Martha Lynn and Mary Lee. Afterh the death of Anna Jerl married Minnie Dell Walkup in 1974 and after her death in 1977 he married Lois McGrady in 1978. His name is on the monument with first wife Anna in Centenary Cemetery in Ohio, however he is buried in Georgia.
