Mary Elizabeth Rhyne was born on 31 August 1880, the fourth child and only daughter of Miles Jacob and Julia Bolinger Rhyne. The family lived in southern Lincoln County near the border with Gaston County in an area generally called Mariposa. Her father was a farmer and of 2010, the farm is still intact. In 1896, when Mary Elizabath was only 15, her mother died. Being the only daughter of 9 children, she generally took on the household responsibilities in her mother's absence. Her oldest brother, John Edward died two years later. Subsequently, in 1900, her father married a second time to Julia Anne Abernethy Kennedy, a widow. They had two more sons in 1902 and 1906. In 1904, Mary Elizabeth married Edgar Pinkney Mundy of nearby Denver in her father's parlor. The 1910 census finds Mary and Edgar living with their daughter, Mary Ellen, and Edgar's mother, now a widow. However, between 1910 and 1918, Edgar encountered mental illness requiring his hospitalization at the NC State Hospital in Morganton. His remaining years were spent in that institution. Mary Elizabeth died 5 June 1967 in Lincolnton. She is buried in Hollybrook Cemetery with her husband.
