Robert Daniel Rhyne was born 20 November 1874, the second child born to Miles Jacob and Julia Monica Bolinger Rhyne at their Lincoln County, NC farm. He was baptized 23 May 1875 at Christ's Lutheran Church in Stanley where his parents were members. Robert's mother died in 1896 when he was 21 and his older brother, Edward, only 2 years later. His younger sister, Mary, became the defacto mother of this family at the age of only 16. In 1900, his father married a second time to Julia Anne Abernethy. Together, they had two more sons, Paul Eugene in 1902 and J.D. in 1906.

In 1905, Robert married Anna Dellinger from Lincon County moved to a farm in Catawba Springs township, Lincoln County where they lived the rest of their lives. Rob died 16 March 1949 in Lincolnton. He is buried in Christ's Lutheran Church cemetery, Stanley, NC near his parents.
