George Horace Rhyne was born 17 Mar 1885, the 6th of 9 children born to Miles (called Milas) Jacob Rhyne and Julia Monica Bollinger Rhyne who lived in southern Lincoln County in a home that still exists in 2010. When Horace was age 10, his mother died. After 4 years of being mostly mothered by his older sister, Mary Elizabeth, his father remarried in 1900 to Julia Anne Abernethy. Julia and Milas had two more children, Paul Eugene in 1902 and J.D. in 1906.

In 1914, Horace married Mary Velma Hauss of Lincolnton. Together they had two children, Celia Margaret born in 1915 and Robert Horace born in 1920. In 1920 George was a dry goods salesman while in 1930 he operated a hotel and farmed. The hotel, the Lithia Inn in Lincolnton was the location where in 1923, daughter Margaret burned to death when her hair caught on fire from a kerosene lamp being used to dry her hair.
