John Edward Rhyne was the first born child of Miles Jacob and Julia Monica Bolinger Rhyne. He first drew breath 19 September 1872 just 9 months after the marriage of his parents. The family lived near Mariposa on the border of Gaston and Lincoln counties in North Carolina where Miles farmed. The family continued to add children, Robert Daniel in 1874, Jacob Walter in 1877, Mary Elizabeth in 1880, William Lee in 1883, George Horace in 1885, Laban Houston in 1887, Wert Baxter in 1890 and Ernest Preston in 1892. In 1896, John Edward's mother, Julia, died at the family home.

Edward determined that he should have a home of his own and some financial security before marriage. In early March 1898, he was clearing some growth from a new piece of land given to him as a birthday gift by his father. As he worked through a spring shower, he ignored the rain and got soaking wet. A few days later, he became ill and ran a high fever. Before a doctor was summoned, he had developed pneumonia. By the time the family doctor arrived, it was too late. On 19 March 1989 John Edward died prematurely at the age of 25. He was buried in Christ's Lutheran Church cemetery in Stanley, NC near his mother.
