Ellen Dugan (Dougan) Heffernan was born in March 1813 in Ballyheen, Templemore, Tipperary, Ireland to Timothy Dugan and Ellen Meehan Dugan. About 1844 she married Thomas Heffernan. In 1863 he and son Timothy came to America. A few months later Ellen and her surviving eight other children joined them in Madison County, New York. One of the children passed on an illness to Thomas, and he passed away, leaving Ellen a widow at age 48 with nine children in a new land. Their children were: Nora Heffernan Donnelly, Timothy Heffernan, Patrick Heffernan, John Heffernan, Catherine ("Kate") Heffernan Sheahan, Michael Heffernan, Thomas Heffernan, James Heffernan, and Edward Heffernan. By 1880 she was living with her son Patrick. She died at age 83 in November 1898 in Madison County, and family tradition is that she is probably buried in an unmarked grave near her husband in St. James Catholic Cemetery in Cazenovia, Madison County, New York. The cemetery, however, has no record of her burial there. So, if not St. James, what cemetery?
