One of ten children of Timothy Heffernan and Catherine Margaret Dwyer Heffernan, Thomas Heffernan was born at Rossmore Bridge in Tipperary, Ireland in July of 1816, and in 1844 he married Ellen Dugan Heffernan. They had nine children: Nora Heffernan Donnelly, Timothy Heffernan, Patrick Heffernan, John Heffernan, Catherine ("Kate") Heffernan Sheahan, Michael Heffernan, Thomas Heffernan, James Heffernan, and Edward Heffernan. In 1863 he and son Timothy came to America. Several months later Ellen and their surviving other seven children joined them in Madison County, New York. An illness one of the children caught aboard ship was passed to Thomas who died at age 48 in Madison County on January 27, 1864. He is buried in Saint James Catholic Cemetery in Cazenovia, Madison County. The Heffernans are descended from [A]Eneas [O']Heffernan (6th century), a Bishop of Emly, and from later Heffernans who were Knights of Malta. I hope one of Thomas' descendants will add his photo to this site.
