One of nine children of Thomas Heffernan and Ellen Dugan Heffernan, Patrick Thomas Heffernan was born between 1848 and 1850 in Glenough Lower, Tipperary, Ireland. He came to America in 1864 (the year his father died) as a child and on May 17, 1882 married Irish-American Barbara Ryan Heffernan in Madison County, New York. They lived in Madison County where they had six children: Ellen Elizabeth Heffernan Heffernan, Mary Heffernan, Margaret Heffernan, Barbara Heffernan, Nora Heffernan, and Catherine Marie Heffernan Donnelly Dougherty. Patrick was about 72 when he died in 1920 in Cazenovia, Madison County, New York. He is probably buried in Saint James Catholic Cemetery in Cazenovia. The Heffernans are descended from Eneas Heffernan (6th century), a Bishop of Emly, and from later Heffernans who were Knights of Malta.
