Mr. Billy Preston James, age 83 of Grapeland, recently of Cartmell Home in Palestine, passed away unexpectedly Thursday evening, August 2, 2007. Mr. James was born February 11, 1924 in Percilla to John B. and Linnie James.
Mr. James was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and worked for many years as a supervisor for Brown & Root Construction in Houston. Mr. James attended First Baptist Church in Grapeland.
Mr. James was known by many Grapeland residents as "Uncle Buck." During the last two years, Mr. James especially enjoyed walking along Main Street and visiting with Grapeland residents.
Survivors include his one daughter Gay Wolters, of Tampa, Fla.; grandson Casey and wife Karen Wolters, of Fla.; great-grandchildren Emma and Austin Wolters, of Fla.; sister Hazel Condron, of Tyler; brothers Loyd James, of Palestine, Doyle James and wife Rosa, of Brownwood, Wade and wife Matilla (Matt), of Tyler and Burnsville, N.C., Dalton and wife Karen, of Burnsville, N.C.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceded in death by his parents John B. and Linnie James; wife Polly; sisters Maudine Dailey and Pearl Clark; brothers Roy, Leonard, Tom, Dan and John R. James.
A Memorial Service for Mr. Billy Preston James to honor his memory and celebrate his life was held Sunday, August 12, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Grapeland.
In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the First Baptist Church, Grapeland, Building Fund.
