Mrs. Serene Bate died at the Northwood Nursing Home May 16. She had been a patient there since June 30, 1971. Funeral services were held May 20 at 2 p.m. in St. John Lutheran Church, Hatton, with Rev. Leonard Thompson officiating. Mrs. Adeline Grindeland was soloist and Mrs. Leonard Thompson was organist. Interment was in Goose River Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers were the Nursing Staff at Tri-County Home and at the Northwood Hospital and Home. Casketbearers were Arnold Bye, Kermit Bye, Leroy Nichols, Orvis Bye, Clark Enger and Jeff Brandon.
Mrs. Bate was born May 1, 1886 in Newburgh township, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carelius Bye. She was baptized and confirmed at Goose River Lutheran Church by the late Rev. Tollefson. She married Dr. Edmond Bate at Boston, Mass., September 17, 1917. They lived in Peoria, Ill. and Denver, Colo. where he was a chiropractor. He died in December 1942. She had lived at St. Paul since 1943.
Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, Edward and Carl and four sisters, Mrs. Ole (Mary) Brandon, Mrs. Fred (Bertha) Anderson, Mrs. Clarence (Helen) Oslund and Mrs. Clarence (Mathilda) Gunderson.
