H.W. Berna Rites Held Saturday At Methodist Church
H.W. Berna, long time resident of this area, died Wednesday, February 14, apparently from a heart attack at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Herman Deonier.
Mrs. Deonier found her father's body when she returned from a quilting in the parental home Wednesday afternoon. He had suffered the fatal attack about two hours previous. He had had a heart condition for some time.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Methodist church with Rev. A.F. Heusel, retired pastor, officiating. Interment was in the Carnegie cemetery.
Henry Wittie Berna was born March 3, 1895, to William and Mary Berna, the fourth of sixteen children. When he was three months old his parents moved to Dublin, Texas, where he grew to manhood. Later moved to the Oney community where he was converted and joined the Highland Methodist church in 1918.
On July 9, 1917, he was married to Miss Buena Gary of Anadarko. Five children were born to them. Mr. Berna and his family moved to the Alfalfa community in 1941 where he was custodian for the Alfalfa school for 13 years, resigning due to ill health. He had been a resident of Carnegie for six years.
He is survived by the wife of the home in Carnegie; two sons, Alfred of Manteca, Calif., and Vollie of Hobart; three daughters, Mrs. Deonier, Carnegie, Mrs. Irene Simpson and Mrs. Juanita Morris, both of Oklahoma City; nine brothers, Omer of Aransas Pass, Texas, Coy and Linzey of Dublin, Texas, Elem of Hico, Texas, Verdett, La Feria, Texas, Rollie, Harlingen, Texas, P.O. Berna, Los Angeles, Calif., Elzie, Midwest City, and L.B. Berna, Anadarko; four sisters, Mrs. Vina Boyer, Geary, Okla., Mrs. Ina Pettyjohn, Dublin, Mrs. Audie Barrey, Fort Cobb and Mrs. Edna Scott, Huntington Beach, Calif., 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
