The man in question here was the son of Benjamin & Susannah (Fetrow) Welcomer. In 1860, he was a laborer presumably living in or near Newville, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 10" tall with light hair and blue eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York August 24, 1861, and mustered into federal service there September 13 as a corporal with Co. E, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was wounded during the 2nd battle of Winchester (probably at Carter's Woods) June 15, 1863, but recovered. On February 22, 1864, at Brandy Station, Virginia, he re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer, only to be captured at the battle of Monocacy July 9, 1864. He was incarcerated at Danville, Virginia, paroled, date unknown, and furloughed to recover from severe illness. When he overstayed his leave, he was listed as a deserter to date November 25, 1864, but returned to duty and honorably discharged with his company June 29, 1865.
On April 26, 1864, during the thirty-five-day leave the army granted to Veteran Volunteers, he married Mary Elizabeth Stout in Harrisburg and fathered Ida E. (b. 02/22/65, d. 08/18/66), Elizabeth I. (b. 03/15/66), Elijah S. (b. 08/13/68), Burt E. (b. @1868), Susan F. (b. 01/07/70), Harry C. (b. 11/26/72), William Warden (b. 11/22/74), Maude M. (b. 04/26/77), Ruth F. (b. 09/24/79 - married Harry Mennig), Harvey E. (b. 03/06/83), and Grace Edith (b. 10/02/85 - married Milton Wilson). After the war, the family lived in Harrisburg where Henry worked for the railroad.
Mary died in 1889 and buried in Dauphin (per her obituary). Henry married Ida Elizabeth "Addie" Snyder January 13, 1892, in Landisburg, Perry County, fathering Charles A. (b. 06/19/96), Emma Verda (b. 04/25/98 - married Harry Robert Leonard), and possibly one other. By then, he had moved to Perry County to work as engineer on a new rail line and died at his home there from "heart disease."
