A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York January 16, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg January 20, 1864, as a private with Co. B, 187th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865. He was maintained on the roster as "Daniel Welcomer."
He married Lydia Louise Holt December 11, 1871, in Otsego, Wright County, Minnesota, and fathered Iona Amelia (b. 07/08/77 - married Henry Brissett), Joseph Clinton (b. 10/10/78), Ralford Rollin (b. 03/12/80, d. 12/06/86), Alfred (b. @1880), Archibald David (b. 09/14/81), Etta Louisa (b. 04/16/83 - married Livingston E. Hayes), Ab Miles (b. 09/25/85), Benjamin Franklin (b. 08/28/86), George Harrison (b. 08/23/88), and Lillian Louise (b. 09/23/90 - thrice married to Daniel Hutchinson, Gustave J. Anderson, and Corydon Dennis Hutchinson).
He is in the 1880 census as "Whitcomb," but why he changed his name remains a mystery.
