She was a freshman at Greenville Women's College, now Furman University, in the fall of 1929 when she met Gerald Dempsey of Landrum, SC. They were married in April 1930 and had 69 years together before Gerald passed in 1999 at age 92.
Willie was an active gardener and cook who loved to share with family and friends, and after her retirement from J.P. Stevens Company, she spent many hours in the garden and kitchen. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Anderson and for over 20 years was President of the Roy Smethers Sunday School Class. She cared for her church family by visitation and meal preparation for the sick and bereaved.

Mrs. Willie Lee Dempsey, age 98, of Anderson, SC passed away quietly early Sunday morning, February 15, 2009 at National Health Care Center in Greenville, SC. Willie was the oldest of 9 children born to William and Eugenia Hayden Lee of Orangeburg, SC. She was predeceased by her parents, 7 brothers, and 1 sister.

Dempsey and his wife Harriet of Greenville,SC and Barbara Dempsey Mishoe of Charlotte, NC. Willie is survived by her children and their spouses, 7 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren scattered from California to South Carolina.

The funeral service will be held in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. with the Reverend Dr. James R. Thomason officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. before the service.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist church of Anderson 300 S. Manning Street, Anderson, SC.
