Wife of James William "Jim" Wilson.

Family history states that in the late 1700's and early 1800's James Wilson was a trader and trapper in North Carolina/Georgia close to the Cherokee Nation and while engaged in this profession, he bartered for his wife, Delilah Shippe, who was at least 1/2 American Indian (probably Cherokee), and 1/2 French. She had difficulty saying his name and pronounced it as "Jeem" instead of Jim. They married and settled in Jackson County, Alabama but migrated to the Sevier County, Arkansas area in the late 1840's or 1850's. It is verified that Jim was still alive when they came to Arkansas as he received a land patent dated in 1857. He held this land patent near present day DeQueen, Arkansas. If family history is correct, Jim Wilson most likely died in the Paraclifta area of Sevier County shortly after the Civil War ended. It has been said he died of a broken heart due to loosing three sons in the war.

Delilah was the mother of the following children with Jim Wilson:
Mathew Wilson 1818 – 10/14/1862
(m. Mary Holley Stephens Bryant 1819 - 10/10/1885)
Isaac Wilson (the Elder) abt. 1819 - 1862
(m. Mary A. Hall)
Elizabeth Wilson 1822 – 1860
(m. Rev. John McHorse)
Jacob Wilson 1824 – aft. 1860
(m. Sally ________ 1824 - aft. 1860)
Thomas Wilson 1826 – aft. 1860
(m. Mary _______ 1826 - aft. 1860)
Daughter Wilson 1828 – 1828
John Anderson Wilson (the Elder) 5/23/1830 - 8/5/1908
(m. Elizabeth Ann Duncan 10/22/1833 - 4/8/1888)
Isabel Wilson 1831 – 1850
(m. _____ Gibson/Gipson )
James W. Wilson, Jr. abt. 1833 - 3/1/1863
(m. Lucrecia Lucinda Newton 1835 - 1860)
(m. Elizabeth Brownfield)
(m. Harriett Humphries bet. 1840/1844 - )
Rachel Wilson abt. 1835 -
(m. D. T. Brumley)
Margaret Wilson abt. 1840 -
Joseph Wilson (not confirmed)

The 1860 US Census shows that Jim and Delila (recorded as "Lila") lived in the Clear Creek Township of Sevier County, Arkansas. He was 72 years of age and Delila was 60. Jim's occupation was farmer. Some of their children had homes of there own in the same area. Jim is shown as having been born in North Carolina and Delilah as having been born in Tennessee. What is interesting is that Delilah's State of birth looks like it says "Tennepee" which is located in Caswell County, North Carolina. But this is not the case. The old way of writing a double "s" was as a "p". Therefore, her State of birth is in fact, Tennessee per this census.

The Jackson County, Alabama 1850 census showed the following:
James Wilson; 60; M; Farmer; NC
Dilia; 50; F; Tenn
James; 19; M; AL
Rachel; 15; F; KY
Margaret; 10; F; AL
Isabel Gibson; 19; F; KY

It is believed that Delilah is buried next to her husband Jim somewhere in Sevier, County, Arkansas. But, there has been consideration given that she is possibly buried in an unmarked grave in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Scott County, Arkansas close to where her daughter-in-law, Mary Holley Bryant Wilson, is buried near the entrance. I do not believe this is so due to the family not migrating to Scott County until after Delilah had died.
The Alabama Census records for 1816 show a Delila Ship lived in Monroe County, Mississippi Territory, and is listed on the 1810-1819 Tax Lists Index. Two Delila Wilson's are listed in the 1850 Federal Census; one in Blount County and one in Greene County.

**NOTE** - Nathaniel Shippe is believed to have possibly been Delilah's father. He was born about 1759 and died in 1798 but this is not verified.
