Mary was the daughter of Samuel Combs and Sarah/Sallie Nickell, who were married in 1843 in Morgan Co. KY. The family is in the 1860 Rowan Co. KY census, which was taken just before Mary was born. A part of Morgan Co. became Rowan Co. Family legend says that Sarah Nickell was Cherokee, but I have, as yet, been unable to document it. The Freeman clan does have high cheek bones, and some have slanted eyes.

We have been unable to find this family in the 1850, and the 1870 census. By 1880, part of this family is in the Lawrence Co. AR census, but they are without father Samuel, Minerva, Jeremiah, John, and Leonard. After 20 years, they were probably all married with families. Family legend says that they left their siblings behind. We have not been able to find any of them in any other censuses. As for father Samuel, a Combs descendant told me on Findagrave, that family legend says that Samuel, who married Nancy Cornett, had a second family with several children. Could this be our Samuel? I think so, but I have no proof.

Mary married a Richardson, (back in KY?), had a baby and was widowed by the time she was 18. It is possible that she married in Kentucky, as there were other Combs/Richardsons unions in southeast Ky. Son Samuel's son Jeremiah married a Vera Richardson. Was she related to Mary's husband Richardson? Did the Richardson family go west with the Combs family?

The next census record we find her in is the 1880 Lawrence Co. Ar. census. She is listed as M. Richardson, and is living with her brother, James Ervin Combs, and his wife Lurana Leona Freeman.

1. S. B. Richardson b ca 1879

The servant named William Freeman, who is Leona's brother married Mary in 1880. Mary married 2) William James Freeman, and they had 7 children together:

Mary and Willie are in Cherokee Co. Ok. in 1900, and by 1905 Willie had remarried to Annie LaBass Huggins, so Mary apparently died sometime between 1900-1904, possibly in Cherokee Co OK.

Mary was my great grandmother, and her son, John was my grandfather.
