Charles W. Colson, 70, City Firefighter
Charles W. Colson, 70, of 1324 Fremont St., died Wednesday evening at St. Joseph Hospital following a lengthy illness.
He was the husband of Patricia Pontz Colson and Barbara A. Colson, who died in 1992.
Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Earl D. and Florence Hacker Colson.
He was a firefighter with the Lancaster City Fire Department for 33 years, retiring in 1987. He was also treasurer of the Fireman's Credit Union. He was both a representative and officer on the city Private Pension Board for 30 years, and held various offices in the Bureau of the Fireman's Relief Association and his union Local 319.
He was a member of the International Association of Firefighters, the Elks Club, the Commercial Travelers Association and the Eighth Ward Club. He was a member of the Contract Negotiation Committee, representing his fellow firefighters for more than 20 years.
Colson helped raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy for 32 years and participated in the Jerry Lewis Telethon. And he was awarded the Harold Quaintance Award from Central Pennsylvania Professional Firefighters Association in 1985.
He was also a member of Faith United Church of Christ, where he served on the consistory and chaired the property commission.
He served in World War II.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Thomas J., husband of Dixie Colson of Mountville, and Charles W. Jr., husband of Julie Colson of Lancaster; three stepsons, Drew Pontz of Glenmoore, Craig Pontz of Dauphin and Brad Pontz of Mechanicsburg; one stepdaughter, Fawn Pontz of Lancaster; five step-grandchildren; and two brothers, Maurice ‘Bud' Colson and Earl ‘Ross' Colson, both of Lancaster.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from Faith United Church of Christ, 1204 Wabank Road, Lancaster, PA on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Melvin S. Mundie officiating. Interment in Riverview Burial Park, Lancaster, PA. Friend may call at Faith United Church of Christ on Saturday morning from 9 to 11 a.m. Please omit flowers.
