George F. Moss
(Farmer, Wheelright, Buggy maker, Carpenter, Welder)
On September 7, 1896 Noble N. Moss (1869 - 1910), farmer purchased fourty acres in Section 31, Union Township from two Hardware Merchants from Ontario, Canada. He cleared the land and in 1904 with neighbors helping, built a barn and house out of the lumber from the trees. He was married to Carrie Amelia Whitehead (1869 - 1959). They had two children Kenneth F. (1904 - 1945) and Nellie E. (1906 - 1927. Noble died in 1910 of meningitis, Nellie died in 1927 of tuberculosis. She never married.
Kenneth married Anna Glenore Ball, daughter of Edward and Agnes (Gleason) Ball. Kenneth farmed and worked for Brian Little repairing radios. There were five children from this marriage - George F., Edward, Kenna Jean (Buzzel), Nancy (Hovey), and Mary Agnes (Harless). Kenneth died in 1945 at the age of forty-one. He had been in ill health for some time.
This account is about George. George attended the Mount Pleasant schools and married Jean M. Darroch on February 3, 1951 in Angola, Indiana. There are five children from this marriage.
George and Jean both worked at the Borden Condensary in Mount Pleasant: George until 1952 and Jean until 1957. George then purchased a Borden milk truck route and ran it until he took a job in the construction industry and worked his way up to be Carpentry Foreman helping to build many large buildings in the Midland and Mount Pleasant area.
In 1959 they moved to the home farm on South Whiteville to take care of Grandma Carrie Whitehead (as written, but should have said Moss), who was in failing health. She died in November of 1959.
In 1964 the family joined the Chippewa Wranglers Riding Club and then helped to form the group known as the Modern Pioneers in 1967. This group took a number of cross-country trips by horse and buggy. While forming the group and getting buggies prepared for the trips, George went to Indiana and learned from the Amish the art of being a wheelright and how to rebuild buggies. He is engaged in this as a hobby at this time. It is actually a family hobby as the whole family is involved in one way or another.
When the carpentry business slowed down in 1967, George went to work for Hubscher & Son Gravel where he is employed at this time.
They have four grandchildren.
