James was the son of Thomas Bryson Mounts and Ida Jane Tatlock. He married Bertha Irene Buchanan May 5, 1939 in Scottsburg, Indiana at the Christian Parsonage. She was the daughter of Jasper Buchanan and Lillian Audrey Morris, Tec5 US Army WWII.
