Thomas was born with very poor vision and attended the Mississippi School For The Blind in Jackson. He lived most of his life in Montgomery,Alabama. At the time of his death he was living in a Masonic home in Montgomery and was a 32nd degree Mason. Thomas could play several musical instruments and tuned pianos for an occupation. He was known to all the family children as Uncle Tommy.
