When Rolland Allan Beglau was five-years-old, the Beglau's family home caught fire in North Dakota. Dad Emmanuel Beglau rushed back into the house to try to save three of his children who were still inside the burning structure. Their only daughters, Alice and Ruth, and son Pershing Beglau perished in the fire. Their father suffered from smoke inhalation and died the next day. Carolina Beglau was pregnant with her eighth child at the time. Two years after the tragedy, Carolina Beglau moved with her baby and the four surviving boys to Milton-Freewater, Oregon.
