US MARINE CORPS WORLD WAR II

Clair Edward Northup enlisted in the Marine Corps during June, 1942 from Selma, Iowa. Qualified Rifle Sharpshooter and completed recruit training in the 7th Recruit Training Battalion, MCB San Diego, CA.

Assigned to G Company, 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division at MCB Camp Elliott, CA. 19 October, 1942 embarked SS Marmacport at San Diego for movement overseas. 9 November, 1942 arrived at Wellington, New Zealand based at Paekakariki.

26 December, 1942 embarked USS McCawley (APA-4). 4 January, 1943 landed on Guadalcanal. 10 January-8 February, 1943 participated in combat operations. 19 February, 1943 embarked USS McCawley (APA-4). 27 February, 1943 arrived at Wellington, New Zealand based at McKays Crossing. Promoted to Private First Class.

1 November, 1943 embarked the USS J Franklin Bell (APA-16) at Wellington. 7-14 November 1943 landing rehearsals at Efate, New Hebrides. 20 November, 1942 boated reserve D-Day at Tarawa Atoll. 21 November, 1943 landed Bariki Island and participated in combat operations until 28 November, 1943.

29 December 1943-January 1944 occupation duty Gilbert Islands. 29 December 1943-7 January 1944 occupation duty Gilbert Islands. 8 January, 1944 embarked USS Prince Georges (AKA-224) at Buariki Island. 20 January, 1944 arrived Hilo, Hawaii based at Camp Tarawa near Kamuela.

11 May, 1944 embarked an LST. 12-19 May, 1944 landing rehearsals in Hawaiian waters. 20-25 May, 1944 in Pearl Harbor. 8-11 June, 1944 at Eniwetok, Marshalls. 15 June, 1944 landed Red Beach One Saipan D-Day and participated in combat operations until Killed in Action 16 June, 1944.

Initially buried in the 2nd Marine Division Cemetery on Saipan.

1948 permanent burial in Keokuk National Cemetery, Keokuk, Iowa.
