On Dec. 8, 1941 she married Dewey Donald Friend. They bought farm land near Drakesville in 1949 and remained there until 1965, when they moved to Bloomfield. She was a homemaker and mother all her life, but she did treasure working at Leon's Hardware, Gilfillan Clinic, Wagler's Furniture, and babysitting for various families in town.
Arda and Dewey had three daughters. Dewey passed on Aug. 6, 1979. Arda then married Lowell Downing on Dec. 31, 1988. Lowell passed Feb. 10, 2000.
Arda enjoyed quilting, tatting, jigsaw puzzles, playing cards, traveling, and visiting with people.
Arda is survived by her daughters, Carolyn (John) Donnelly of Ankeny, Gwen Kincart of Round Rock, Texas, and Sherry Brown of Round Rock, Texas; 4 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; brothers, Arlo (Shorty) Northup of Ottumwa, Robert Northup of Kahoka, Mo.; a sister, Helen Murrell of Bloomfield; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, 7 brothers and sisters, and 14 half brothers and sisters.
Per her wishes, Arda was cremated and will be buried May 27, 2023 beside her first husband in the IOOF cemetery in Bloomfield. There will be a service on May 27 at the United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. with lunch to follow. Burial will take place after the luncheon.
